1. Stay Calm and Respectful

The first and most important rule is to remain calm. Panicking or acting aggressively won't help your situation; in fact, it could make things much worse.

Indonesian law enforcement takes disrespect seriously, and being rude can lead to more complications.

A polite and respectful attitude goes a long way. Greet the officer with a smile, and listen carefully to what they say.

The Bali traffic police are simply doing their job to enforce traffic rules and ensure safety on the roads.

2. Pull Over in a Safe Spot

When you see an officer signaling you to stop, don't just slam on the brakes in the middle of the road.

Safely pull your scooter over to the side of the road, away from traffic. This shows you are cooperative and also ensures your safety and that of other road users.

The Bali roads can be busy, so a safe stop is crucial.

3. Have Your Documents Ready

Before you even start your engine, make sure you have all the necessary documents on you.

When an officer asks, be ready to present your international driving permit, your passport, and the vehicle registration (STNK) for your scooter.

Cinchy provides the STNK for all our rentals, and we’ve made sure our motorbike license and registration details are always up-to-date.

If you don't have your license or other required documents, politely explain your situation.

Having everything in order is the best way to avoid any potential traffic violations.

4. Ask for an Official Ticket

If the officer informs you that you’ve committed a violation, ask for an official ticket, or Surat Tilang

This is a formal document detailing the violation and the corresponding police fine. This is a critical step to protect yourself from scams. There are two types of official tickets:

  • Red Slip (Surat Tilang Merah): This is for violators who contest the ticket. You'll be given a date to appear in court (Pengadilan Negeri). This process can take 7 to 14 days, which might be a hassle for short-term tourists.

  • Blue Slip (Surat Tilang Biru): This is for violators who admit their mistake. The process is much faster. You simply pay the fine through the e-Tilang system, either via the website e-tilang.id or the official app. This is the most common and straightforward option.

5. If You Disagree, Voice It Respectfully

If you genuinely believe you have not committed a violation, you have the right to contest it.

The procedures for this are usually detailed on the ticket itself.

It's important to present your case calmly and logically.

However, remember that the Red Slip process can be time-consuming, so weigh the pros and cons before you decide to go to court.

6. Do NOT Offer a Bribe

This is a non-negotiable rule. Offering a Bali police bribe for foreigners is illegal and can lead to serious legal consequences.

While stories of this practice are common, it's best to avoid it at all costs. Politely decline any suggestions of paying a fine "on the spot" or in cash without an official ticket.

If you feel pressured, you can simply say you prefer to follow the official law enforcement procedure.

At Cinchy, we believe in supporting our customers.

If you feel something is not right, or you're unsure how to proceed, don't hesitate to contact our 24/7 customer support team.

We can provide advice and help you navigate the situation, ensuring your trip isn't disrupted.

7. Obey the Law

If you've been ticketed, the best course of action is to follow the official process.

Pay the police fine as instructed on your ticket.

Delays in payment can lead to more complications down the road.

Remember, the goal of the police is to maintain order and safety, and by cooperating with the process, you are helping to ensure that.

Riding a scooter is the best way to experience Bali's magic, and we want to make sure you do it safely and without a hitch.

At Cinchy, we pride ourselves on providing a top-tier service that makes your trip easy and enjoyable.
