Pura Petitenget is a 16th-century Balinese Hindu sea temple located right in the heart of Seminyak. 

While most tourists come to this area for the nightlife and surfing, the temple remains one of the most important spiritual landmarks on the island’s west coast.

It is classified as a Pura Dang Kahyangan, a temple built to honor the holy travels of legendary priests.

History of Pura Petitenget

The history of Pura Petitenget is as mystical as the temple itself. Its origins date back to approximately 1549, during the spiritual journey of the famous Javanese high priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha (also known as Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh).

The name "Petitenget" tells the story perfectly:

• Peti: Means "chest" or "box."
• Tenget: Means "sacred" or "haunted."

Legend has it that when Dang Hyang Nirartha arrived in this once-wild jungle, he left behind a sacred betel nut container (peti). 

He commanded a spirit giant named Buto Ijo to guard this chest. 

Buto Ijo took his duty so seriously that anyone who dared to approach the area became mysteriously ill.This led to a local plague among the villagers. 

Seeking a solution, the priest instructed the locals to build a shrine on the site to appease the spirits. 

Once the temple was completed, the illness vanished, and peace was restored. Today, the temple stands as a testament to that resolution, dedicated to deities like Dewi Sri (the goddess of fertility) and the spirit of the priest himself.

What to See in Pura Petitenget

While it may not be as sprawling as Pura Besakih, Pura Petitenget possesses a unique charm that makes it incredibly photogenic and serene.

1. Traditional Balinese Architecture

Unlike many other temples that use gray volcanic stone, this temple is famous for its extensive use of red brick and sandstone. This gives it a warm, rustic aesthetic that feels very "Old Bali."

2. The Magnificent Candi Bentar

The entrance features a grand split gate (Candi Bentar) with intricate carvings and dragon statues guarding the stairs. It is the perfect spot for a respectful photo.

Entrance Fee to Pura Petitenget

Visiting this sacred site is quite affordable. The entrance fee for Pura Petitenget is approximately IDR 50,000 per person.
