If you’re exploring the stunning island of Bali on a scooter, the Yamaha NMAX is one of the most comfortable and stylish rides you can choose.
With its spacious seat, smooth handling, and large underseat storage access, it’s perfect for both short trips around town and long coastal rides.
But if you’ve just rented an NMAX, especially for the first time, you might be wondering how to open a Yamaha NMAX seat so you can store your helmet, backpack, or shopping items in the scooter’s storage compartment.
Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think, whether you’re riding the older model with a keyhole or the newer keyless version.
How to Open Yamaha NMAX Seat
Opening your NMAX seat isn’t just about convenience, it’s essential for accessing your scooter key function features, such as storing items or checking your bike’s toolkit.
The process depends on whether you have the Yamaha NMAX’s old version or the new version with a smart key system.
Yamaha NMAX Old Version

If you’re riding an older NMAX model, the process involves a traditional key:
Locate the seat keyhole: The NMAX seat keyhole location is usually found just below the handlebar, near the ignition area. Some models have a sliding key cover for extra security.
Unlock the key cover (if applicable): If there’s a small protective plate covering the keyhole, slide it open by inserting your key tip into the slot and turning it according to the arrow direction.
Insert the key: Make sure it’s fully inserted into the ignition slot.
Turn the key to the left: Slowly rotate it counter-clockwise until you feel the spring release and hear a soft click. This means the seat lock has been disengaged.
Lift the seat: Open it completely to avoid it snapping back and catching your fingers.
Closing the seat: Press the seat down firmly until you hear a locking sound.

The newer NMAX models use a keyless ignition system, making access even easier:
Activate the knob: Press any button on the smart key remote for about 3 seconds until the indicator light turns on. Make sure you’re within range.
Turn the ignition knob: Rotate the knob to the “OPEN” position. This knob is usually located on the right side of the bike near the rider’s knee.
Press the ‘seat’ button: Below the knob, you’ll see two buttons: “fuel” and “seat.” Press the “seat” button, and you’ll hear the lock release.
Lift the seat: Open it fully to reveal your spacious scooter’s storage compartment.
Emergency Way to Open NMAX Seat Using Keyless System
Sometimes, technology isn’t on your side. A dead battery in the smart key or the scooter can leave you stranded — but Yamaha has built in an emergency solution.
Every keyless Yamaha NMAX comes with a physical emergency key. Here’s how to use it:
Prepare your emergency key: This small mechanical key usually comes hidden inside the smart key fob or in a separate key case.
Locate the hidden slot: The slot is positioned under the rear seat area, close to the right-side shock absorber. Look for a small black rubber cap.
Open the rubber cap: Gently pull it open to reveal the hidden lock.
Insert the emergency key: Turn it slowly until the seat unlocks.
This is also useful if you’re dealing with Yamaha NMAX seat lock stuck issues or need to know how to open a NMAX seat without key in an emergency.
