After a long flight to Bali, you’re probably itching to get to the pristine, white sands of Nusa Dua, especially if you’ve chosen the freedom of a scooter rental.
The journey from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), often simply referred to as Bali Airport, to your hotel in Nusa Dua is quick, straightforward, and a perfect introduction to the island’s stunning scenery.
This guide is specifically for those who choose to ride their own rental scooter, like the ones offered by Cinchy, from the moment they land.
We'll cover everything from the general conditions and the best routes to essential preparations to ensure your first Bali ride is smooth and safe.
General Conditions from Bali Airport to Nusa Dua
The trip from Bali Airport to Nusa Dua is one of the shortest and most convenient routes on the island. Nusa Dua is located in the southeastern tip of the island, a mere hop, skip, and a jump from the airport.
The distance and travel time from Denpasar airport to Nusa Dua (specifically to the main Nusa Dua area) is only about 12–14 km. This short distance means the journey is typically very quick:
Optimal Time: Under 15 minutes if you use the toll road and traffic conditions are light.
Average Time: 15–35 minutes. The higher end of this estimate accounts for heavy traffic (especially during rush hour) or using the non-toll route.
The road quality is generally excellent, particularly on the Bali Mandara Toll Road (also known as the Tol Udara or Sea Toll Road).
This spectacular elevated highway connects the airport, Benoa Harbour, and Nusa Dua, offering incredible sea views as you ride.
However, if you opt for the non-toll route via Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai, be prepared for typical Balinese congestion, more traffic lights, U-turns, and parked vehicles that can significantly slow down your journey.

Riding your scooter rental from the airport is an exhilarating start to your vacation. Since you are riding a scooter, you have two great options to consider.
1. The Recommended Shortcut Route
For the fastest and most scenic route, you should take the Bali Mandara Toll Road. This is a designated toll road, but unlike many other countries, scooters are permitted on a specific, separate lane (Class VI).
Exiting the Airport: After you pick up your pre-booked scooter (we'll explain how Cinchy makes this easy below!), follow the signs out of the airport towards the main road, Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai.
Entering the Toll: Follow the signs for the Toll Road (or Jalan Tol) heading towards Nusa Dua. You will take the ramp onto the toll road.
Toll Payment: Motorbikes have a specific, low toll tariff (around IDR 5,500). Crucially, you must pay electronically using an e-toll card (like Flazz, e-Money Mandiri, BRIZZI, or TapCash). Cash is not accepted. Make sure your card is topped up before you enter the airport or that you acquire one from a mini-mart/bank before your ride.
The Ride: Enjoy the stunning ride over the water! The toll road bypasses all the main congestion, providing a smooth and unforgettable start.
Note: Since a portion of the toll road is elevated over the sea, be mindful of strong crosswinds. If it’s raining heavily or the winds are very high, consider the non-toll alternative for safety.
2. The Common Route: Via Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai (Free)
If you don't have an e-toll card or prefer to avoid the toll, this is your alternative. It’s the standard, free way for how to get from Denpasar airport to Nusa Dua.
Exiting the Airport: Head onto Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai and follow the signs heading east/south towards Nusa Dua.
Staying on the By Pass: You will stay on this main bypass road until you see clear signs directing you to turn right towards Nusa Dua / Jalan Nusa Dua Selatan.
The Trade-off: While this route is free, it has numerous traffic lights, potential U-turn spots, and higher density of vehicles. Expect to encounter much heavier traffic conditions, especially during peak hours.
Regardless of your chosen path, the convenience of having your own transport makes getting from Bali airport to Nusa Dua a stress-free process. And speaking of convenience...

Things to Prepare Before Riding from Bali Airport to Nusa Dua

Riding in Bali is a fantastic experience, but a little preparation goes a long way, especially for your first ride from the airport.
1. Documentation is Key
Before you even think about your scooter rental, make sure you have the right papers, as police checks are common.
Valid ID: Your original Passport or KTP.
Valid Driving License: For foreigners, an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the correct motor-cycle endorsement is strongly recommended—it’s legally required and crucial for insurance purposes. A local SIM C is also acceptable.
Flight and Hotel Bookings: Cinchy makes the process easy, but we require your round-trip flight tickets and hotel bookings for the duration of the rental.
2. Safety and Coverage
Your safety and the condition of the scooter are paramount.
Helmet and Gear: A helmet is mandatory for both the rider and passenger. Cinchy provides a quality helmet (and a child-sized one upon request) and disposable hair nets for hygiene. Ensure the helmet meets SNI standards (Indonesian National Standard).
Cinchy Insurance Coverage: You can choose from two options:
Basic Coverage: Protects against accidents only. You are responsible for the first IDR 2 million of any damage (the deductible). Theft is not included.
Full Coverage: Protects against both accidents and theft with no deductible.
Important Note: Our insurance does not cover damages from negligence (e.g., leaving keys in the ignition, operating off-road, tire damage) or personal injury/third-party liability. You must always ride responsibly!
3. Motorbike Check and Essentials
Before you leave the delivery point near the airport, take 60 seconds for a quick check:
Motor Condition: Check the brakes, lights, tires, and fuel.
Documents: Ensure you have the rental contract and the motorbike’s STNK (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan—registration certificate).
Toll Card: If you choose the toll route, confirm your e-toll card has sufficient balance.
Cinchy Extras: Take advantage of the free facilities Cinchy provides: a phone holder for easy navigation and a raincoat/poncho for sudden tropical downpours.
