What is the Galungan and Kuningan Day in Bali?

Hari Raya Galungan (the Great Day of Galungan) is the most significant Balinese Hindu celebration, marking the victory of Dharma (goodness or righteousness) over Adharma (evil or unrighteousness).

It is a day of deep spiritual significance and joyous communal celebration.

More profoundly, Galungan is the time when the deified ancestors and the spirits of deceased family members descend from the heavens to visit their living relatives on Earth.

The elaborate rituals performed throughout the celebration are a way to welcome and honor these ancestral spirits. The very word “Galungan” is believed to originate from Old Javanese, meaning “to win.”

The most visually striking tradition during this period is the installation of the Penjor. These are tall, gracefully arching bamboo poles, elaborately decorated with woven young coconut leaves (janur), fruits, flowers, and agricultural products.

Placed in front of nearly every home and lining the streets, the penjor is a profound symbol of gratitude for prosperity and the victory of good over evil.

Seeing the main roads adorned with hundreds of these swaying, elegant structures is an unforgettable sight that defines the atmosphere during Galungan and Kuningan in Bali.

Kuningan marks the conclusion of the Galungan holiday series.

It is the day when the ancestral spirits, having been honored by their families, ascend back to Kahyangan (the heavens or ancestral realm).

The name “Kuningan” is associated with the color yellow (kuning), which symbolizes spiritual light, sanctity, and fertility.

You'll notice many offerings/canang sari and decorations feature this vibrant yellow hue.

A specific tradition on this day is the preparation of endongan, small pouches made of coconut leaves filled with various grains, tubers, and seeds, which are placed as provisions for the ancestors' journey back home.

When is Galungan and Kuningan in Bali?

Unlike holidays based on the Gregorian calendar, the dates for Galungan and Kuningan in Bali are determined by the traditional Balinese calendar, known as the Pawukon.

This calendar operates on a 210-day cycle, which is significantly shorter than the 365-day solar year.

Because of this unique system, the Galungan-Kuningan cycle occurs roughly twice every Gregorian year

If you are fortunate enough to be on the island during these times, you will be witnessing the peak of Balinese religious and cultural life.

To give you an idea of when to look for the festivities, here are the dates for 2025:

  • Galungan: April 23, 2025, and November 19, 2025

  • Kuningan: May 3, 2025, and November 29, 2025

Being in Bali during these specific days means you will experience the most intensive rituals and the deepest sense of communal celebration.

The Stages of the Galungan and Kuningan Celebration

The celebration is not a single day but a profound spiritual journey that spans approximately 42 days.

It is a process of physical and spiritual preparation, the welcoming of spirits, and their final send-off. Here are the key stages, using the November 2025 cycle as a timeline reference:

  • Sugihan Jawa (Thursday, November 13, 2025): This day is dedicated to the cleansing and purification of the outer world (Bhuana Agung), including the environment and sacred places.

  • Sugihan Bali (Friday, November 14, 2025): Following the outer cleansing, this day focuses on the purification of oneself (Bhuana Alit), preparing the mind and spirit for the upcoming victory of Dharma.

  • Penyekeban Galungan (Sunday, November 16, 2025): Philosophically, this day means "to restrain the senses" (nyekeb indriya)—controlling one's inner desires and avoiding negative actions.

  • Penyajaan Galungan (Monday, November 17, 2025): A day for self-determination and preparing the traditional Balinese cakes (jaja) for the offerings (sesajen).

  • Penampahan Galungan (Tuesday, November 18, 2025): This is an incredibly busy day! Families prepare traditional dishes like lawar (a type of salad), and, most visibly, they erect the beautiful Penjor in front of their homes, marking the streets with their graceful arches.

  • Hari Raya Galungan (Wednesday, November 19, 2025): The main day. Balinese people dress in their finest traditional attire to perform prayers at their family temple (sanggah) and then proceed to public temples (pura) with their family.

  • Umanis Galungan (Thursday, November 20, 2025): A day for socializing, visiting relatives, and relaxation. The tradition of Ngelawang often takes place, where a protective mythological creature called the Barong is paraded around the villages.

  • Hari Raya Kuningan (Saturday, November 29, 2025): The final ceremony. Devotees offer prayers from morning until noon with special sesajen that include yellow rice (nasi kuning), which gives the day its name, along with tamiang (a symbol of protection) and kolem (a symbol of rest).

Tips for Travelers During Galungan and Kuningan in Bali

Being on the island during this sacred time is a privilege, offering you a rare, intimate glimpse into Balinese culture. To ensure you have a rewarding and respectful experience, here are a few essential tips:

1. Dress and Etiquette at Temples and Ceremonies

If you plan to visit a temple or are near a religious procession, make sure to pay attention to its etiquette:

  • Dress Modestly: For men, wear a shirt with sleeves; for women, ensure your shoulders are covered.

  • Sarong and Sash: You will generally be required to wear a sarong (a cloth wrapped around the lower body) and a sash (selempot or belt) to enter a pura. If you don't have one, ask temple officials or locals if they can be borrowed or rented.

  • Be Respectful: Maintain a calm demeanor, avoid making loud noise, and never block the path of a procession or the line of people entering the temple.

2. Respect the Rituals and Traditions

This is not a regular tourist event; it is a profoundly important religious period.

  • Photography: Be cautious about taking photos, especially during a sacred ritual. Always ask permission first, or simply follow the lead of local residents. Never use a flash or obstruct the ceremony.

  • Driving: The roads, particularly in villages, will be busy with people installing penjor, making offerings, and visiting family. Drive slowly and with extra caution, especially on narrow or crowded streets.

  • Local Invitations: If you are invited into a local home or traditional village to observe, be mindful of their rules—this might mean removing your shoes or not entering certain sacred areas.

3. Planning Your Transportation

Given the focus on family and community, transportation and local services can be affected.

  • Accommodation and Services: Since many Balinese travel home or take time off for family, some tourism services (restaurants, tours, small shops) may be limited or temporarily closed, especially on Galungan and Kuningan itself. Check with your hotel or tour operator in advance.

  • Driving the Decorated Streets: The incredible presence of penjor along the main roads can sometimes narrow the passage. If you are renting a vehicle, drive carefully and be alert to pedestrians.

To truly explore the island and witness the preparations and festivities of Galungan and Kuningan in Bali, you'll need the freedom to move at your own pace.

With processions and family visits making central roads busy, a scooter is often the best and most convenient way to experience the local magic.
